Hey. Gentiles. Listen up for a sec.

When September and October are nearing and you’re planning an event: google “Rosh Hashanah *year*” and *Yom Kippur *year*” and then, and I cannot stress this enough, don’t plan your event on those days. In fact, don’t plan any events starting sundown the night before. Those are the three most important days of the Jewish calendar, and, once again, I cannot stress enough how much this little bit of forethought and kindness will make every Jew you know cry tears of joy.

in 2023, the night before Rosh Hashanah is Thursday evening, September 14.

Rosh Hashanah ends Sunday evening, September 17.

in 2023, the night before Yom Kippur is Saturday evening, September 23.

Yom Kippur ends Monday evening, September 25.

Ruby Bridges is 68. This is not ancient history. Not even close.

I know Ruby. She’s a really nice person. The idea that they would try and write what she did as a girl out of history is shocking to me on so many levels, the simplest of which is just, but don’t they know how lovely she is?

Ruby was in Tucson, AZ last Thanksgiving. I wasn’t able to attend due to illness, but I appreciated the opportunity.

Mental illnesses and developmental disabilities can make it completely impossible to live safely alone for the rest of your life. These people are the most vulnerable people in our community, but are often cast aside in favor of trying to present those of us who can live independently as proof that we can be “normal” and deserve respect.

Some of us can get by homing with other disabled people whose disabilities compliment ours, allowing us to help each other. Others have to depend on their family. Still others absolutely need professional carers, and only a fraction of those that need them have them, with many depending on untrained family, friends, and spouses to assist them.

We need more trained carers available, both live-in and visiting. We need more coverage of caring services by insurance. We need more acknowledgment that mental illness and developmental disability can require carers and assistance from those we live with and around.

God is my witness I initially read this as “TOPS ARE A PRIVILEGE! THEY MUST BE EARNED!” and I thought that was a tad presumptuous of an employer.

Hey hey this is *SUPER* illegal in the United States holy cow.

If you are in this country and took the job, which I hope you didn’t, now is definitely the time to look into a pro-bono labour rights lawyer. You’re definitely eligible for back pay of any tips withheld and probably more. If you’re in any progressive state there’s a good chance your rights go beyond this. Regardless, federal regulations:

On a personal note I am seeing red over the situation. Fuck them for the audacity to pull this shit. Fuck them for being manipulative, abusive bosses.

I shudder to imagine the culture there.

on the topic of not using AI for research, also be aware of using automatic Google results because they rely on AI too and don’t ACTUALLY know what they’re talking about

case in point: oh let’s Google what flowers are safe for cats!

image

Google: lilies! source? trust me bro

Lilies?

You mean perhaps the most poisonous plant for cats there is? that can cause sudden Organ Shut Down and Death? Thanks Google! Good thing I can rely on your handy suggestions so I don’t have to click on any actual websites and read to make sure your information is correct! (Also tulips and daffodils will also definitely Smite your cat but I’m not sure about the other flowers)

remember just because Google or an AI is telling you something confidently doesn’t mean it actually knows what it’s talking about

I trust no seasoned writer or researcher does this but this is more a message to newer or younger writers or anyone with less experience with Google and how it works

Replacing physical buttons and controls with touchscreens also means removing accessibility features. Physical buttons can be textured or have Braille and can be located by touch and don’t need to be pressed with a bare finger. Touchscreens usually require precise taps and hand-eye coordination for the same task.

Many point-of-sale machines now are essentially just a smartphone with a card reader attached and the interface. The control layout can change at a moment’s notice and there are no physical boundaries between buttons. With a keypad-style machine, the buttons are always in the same place and can be located by touch, especially since the middle button has a raised ridge on it.

Buttons can also be located by touch without activating them, which enables a “locate then press” style of interaction which is not possible on touchscreens, where even light touches will register as presses and the buttons must be located visually rather than by touch.

When elevator or door controls are replaced by touch screens, will existing accessibility features be preserved, or will some people no longer be able to use those controls?

Who is allowed to control the physical world, and who is making that decision?

bayesic-bitch:

Tumblr really has ruined me. I was in a Rite-Aid and “out of touch” came on over the speakers, and I freaked out a bit because I thought I had missed my thursday morning meeting. It took me a minute before I remembered that Out of Touch playing does not always mean its thursday. sometimes people just play the song.
